Metal dusting, carbon rot, green rot are the names most used for alloy deterioration of a component at the transition area from furnace through refractory. This can happen with radiant tubes, fans, thermocouple protection tubes, element leads etc.. There are known ways to eliminate this. I don't want to let the cat out of the bag at this site, but would be willing to talk you through this if you are having a problem I can extend the parts life!
